The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has achieved a significant milestone by crossing 50 lakh rooftop solar installations, marking a major step in India’s clean energy transition and the expansion of residential solar power across the country. The achievement comes just 29 months after the scheme’s launch in February 2024 and represents half of the programme’s target of covering one crore households by March 2027.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) said the scheme has emerged as the world’s largest domestic rooftop solar programme, with the pace of installations accelerating sharply over the past nine months. Daily installations have increased from around 5,038 in October 2025 to nearly 16,328 in July 2026, while July 2026 alone recorded 5.06 lakh rooftop solar installations, the highest monthly addition since the scheme was launched.
The scheme is currently benefiting nearly one lakh households every six days, reflecting growing public participation in rooftop solar adoption. By enabling households to generate their own electricity, the initiative is helping consumers reduce electricity bills while promoting clean and sustainable energy. Eligible beneficiaries receive Central Financial Assistance for installing rooftop solar systems, with subsidies covering up to 40 per cent of installation costs for smaller systems.
Launched with an outlay of ₹75,021 crore, PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana aims to provide rooftop solar systems to one crore households, offering up to 300 units of free electricity per month and supporting India’s renewable energy goals while reducing carbon emissions and strengthening energy security.
